FINN was born in June of 2005, one minute after his brother BAIRD and less than three years after his sister SARAH.
On October 9, 2008, a cancer that I can neither pronounce nor spell took FINN's life.
I never had the privilege of meeting FINN in person. I have spoken to him since his passing many times. In early 2009, I met FINN's father, PATRICK SULLIVAN, online.
I had signed up for the inaugural Ride to Conquer Cancer. A bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle. I didn't own a bike.
I started writing about various related things online. That is how PATRICK found me. Apparently, he found me funny. He nervously called and invited me to join "TEAM FINN". And, without knowing FINN, or his story, I joined. Never in a million years would I have ever imagined how that call would impact my life.
FINN has taught me so much. As his mantra says, to RUN, JUMP, BOUNCE, DANCE, SING, SMILE, and LOVE. And, later, to RIDE.
My biggest take away from FINN is his teaching of the importance of living. Right now matters. So, live it!
The Ride to Conquer Cancer is now known as the Tour de Cure. On August 27th, almost 2,000 participants raised approximately $6.3m. Does it get any better than that??? Actually, it does!!!! In 2023 we are returning to a two day format. The 2023 Tour de Cure is August 26th and 27th.
Due to personal health challenges (not cancer related), I have been unable to personally participate for the last few years. I'm not sure I'll be able to pedal for the 2023 ride. However, you will definitely see me on the side of the road cheering everyone on. I am even considering jumping back into fundraising (which can be more difficult than the ride itself).
Curious? Interested? Take the jump. Call me. Join. It's a life changing experience for you and life saving for others.
Thanks!
Mike
